Announced 2nd April 2008, these new entry level processors extend the System i processor offerings into POWER 6. On this date IBM also announced ability to run V6R1 (i 6.1) on a POWER 6 blade, when installed in either a BladeCenter H or BladeCenter S chassis.
As before, i5/OS licensing for these entry level models is by CONCURRENT USER (or DEVICE).
For the existing iSeries user, this is an excellent choice to replace older P05/P10 models, although the restriction on i5/OS (local) users (40 maximum) may rule it out of consideration. There are other configuration constraints imposed by IBM, so be sure to check.

This processor is also a good choice to support other operating systems (Linux, AIX and/or Windows in any combination), all integrated and administered through one interface. There is no limitation on users for clients accessing the processor.
With more growth, expansion and processing power than the entry models, these models are would make excellent replacements for older P10/P20 processors. Capacity on Demand provides a temporary or permanent upgrade to CPW = 8300. With these models there are no configuration restrictions, and a fibre connection allows support for those users looking for SAN connectivity and/or heterogeneous operating systems.

CBU Edition
Note¹: This processor is also available as a designated CBU Edition. Due to special CBU software (transfer) licensing rules customers need not purchase additional IBM Licensed Program Products for these processors.
The CBU Edition is also available as a POWER6 blade in a BladeCenter chassis (see below). Same CBU licensing rules apply.
This offering allows small and medium businesses the opportunity to consolidate both iSeries and Windows server environments in a single BladeCenter chassis. A single view of all resources, a single point of management and simplified cabling.
Starting Configuration
- BladeCenter JS12
IBM pricing means that smaller business now have a choice between separate
or integrated systems for the same price.
